Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with beige horizontal siding, a covered front porch, and a dark shingled roof, set behind a lawn with shrubs, leafy trees on both sides, and a wet street in the foreground.

Sizing and installation quality matter here for a reason that runs opposite to what you might expect from a short cooling season. Homes in LaMoure County, ND run cooling in a single month of the year, July. The compressor starts cold every June after months without a cycle, and a contactor or capacitor that weakened over winter will not announce itself until the system calls for it. A contractor quoting a new install in this county has to account for that dormancy pattern when specifying components, because a part rated for continuous seasonal use is not the same as one that will start reliably after a long idle and then run hard through July.

Ductwork sized for a furnace and nothing else is what a contractor finds behind the walls of a typical house in this county. Half the homes in LaMoure County, North Dakota were built in 1965 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A central AC system moves a different volume of air than the heating-only equipment those ducts were built around, and where the runs are undersized or the layout was never meant to carry cooling, the duct side of the job expands before the unit itself is ever ordered. Electrical service in houses of this vintage is the other variable a contractor measures early, because the panel that served the original load was not sized for a modern compressor.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway single-story building showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by a line set.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along an exterior wall, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. The indoor air handler or furnace fan sits inside, most often in a utility room, basement, or attic, and moves air through the system. Together, those two units are what a Central AC installation puts in place.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, connecting the two through an exterior wall. A programmable thermostat mounts on an interior wall and serves as the control point for the whole system, telling the equipment when to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits the specifics of your house.
